Backflip Studios, the Boulder, CO based mobile game developer, doesn’t try and reinvent the wheel with their take on the classic game Solitaire. Despite a few added features, this game app for the iPhone is the same solitaire you played on your mom’s first Windows 95 PC, only the mouse clicks are replaced by finger taps and the cards don’t cascade in a waterfall when you win (unfortunately).
You have the option of playing one or three card draws in normal or Vegas mode. Each move earns coins which rack up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen; coins can then be used for “cheats” which include peeking at the next card, moving any stack into an empty slot and searching the deck for a specific needed card. A hint button is also available if you get stuck on a move.
The music for the game is ambient and sounds like something Radiohead would produce if they composed music for iPhone games. The sound effects include card shuffling and the ‘ka-ching’ of coins being collected when a player makes a move. Both can be turned off in the options page.
Two backdrop themes are immediately available for players: classic and flowers mode, and others can be purchased for a modest 10,000 coins. A one-time price of $0.99 will remove ads for other games from Backflip Studios from your screen, but they aren’t too intrusive if you want to opt for the free version.
Solitaire by Backflip is solid fun, and will bring you back to the days of playing solitaire on your family desktop when you used to checkAOL mail and surf the web on Netscape Navigator.
