Monster Mouth DDS is a Toothache

Monster Mouth DDS by Breaktime Studios is a game about cleaning monsters’ teeth which sounds like a dangerous profession but the only danger in this app is the finger burn you might get from repetitively rubbing your iPhone or iPad from scrubbing their teeth clean. Monster Mouth DDS turns out to be a simple, repetitive and ultimately unrewarding game. You start in the lobby area with your first patient, a relative of King Kong. This level provides the only tutorial on how to clean a monster’s teeth by using the big ape as the guinea pig. A still screen shows your tools, timers, penalty spots and where to find objectives on the screen. The tools provided at the bottom of the screen are intuitive: (a) the toothbrush is for cleaning the teeth (b) bombs are for blasting cracks open and should you find little critters inhabiting your monster’s teeth you use  (c) pliers to pry them out and then place (4) a cap on the tooth. Some teeth have hidden problems that are only indicated through their red color after you scrub them clean. Use the radar scope to reveal problem areas and quickly take care of them. Your score is a combination of how fast you take care of your patients and how many times you caused them pain (i.e. accidentally misplacing a bomb in their mouth). It only takes a couple of little hurts before your monster decides it rather have a snack than a flossing. Some monsters have little quirks that will delay the cleaning process like belching fire which will cover clean teeth with soot again.

The app this is free, but  only get 3 levels before having to pay $0.99 to play with more of your furry and scaly friends. So far there are only 10 levels available, but Breaktime Studios promises more levels and challenge modes later on. Average art and game play design combined with low game content results in shallow replay expectations. Add on micro-transactions to unlock new levels and Monster Mouth DDS turns out to be as appealing as an actual visit to the dentist.
