Preschool Memory Match and Learn app review: seven matching games for kids

Reviews

Introduction

Preschool Memory Match and Learn : 7 in 1 Educational Matching Games for Kids HD by KID BABY TODDLER LTD. is an app especially designed to have kids matching items in seven different categories. The game will help them with their memory, eye-hand coordination, and concentration skills as they work through the categories.

What It's All About

The seven categories are Vegetables, Fruits, Alphabet, Shapes, Colors, Numbers, and Nature. Each category starts out with just four items to match. Once the child gets that right, he or she is awarded points according to the amount of time it took. The next level has the kids matching six items, then eight items. That’s the extent of the free version; if you want more stages, you’ll have to make the in-app purchase to upgrade to the full version. This costs $1.99 and gets rid of the ads. Alternatively, you can purchase single categories for $0.99 but that doesn’t really make much sense.

This app isn’t just about matching, either. The name of each item that you select appears on the screen and the word is said aloud. This can help new readers learn the words and spelling for different items.

A Bit More About The Game

The Settings page allows you to turn the music and sound on and off, which is nice, although the music isn’t terribly annoying like some kids’ games. You can also turn the score system and the clock off and just let your child play for fun. The Settings are quite customizable, with plenty more things to configure.

Gameplay is fun for kids. The game is pretty responsive, although somewhat slow when you’re trying to match quickly. For each correct match the child makes, the app gives brief praise.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Fun for kids
  • Helps kids with their memory, concentration, and dexterity skills
  • Lots of configurable settings

Cons

  • Only get the first three levels in each of the seven categories for free
  • Response might be too slow for older kids

Final Verdict

I think this would be a great app for kids three to five or six. Anyone older than that might get frustrated with the response time when trying to match as quickly as possible. My five year old really liked playing this, so I’ll be buying the full version for her for the iPad. The colors are bright and engaging and the sound effects are suitable for kids.
