Doctor X - Med School app review: treat some patients and pretend to be a doctor

Reviews

Introduction

Doctor X - Med School by Kids Fun Club by Tab Tale lets kids be the doctor and fix all of the patients. It will teach kids about the kinds of tools that doctors really use. The free version has limited tools but you can purchase more if you’re interested.

What It's All About

If your kid has a dream to be a doctor someday, or just likes to make people feel better, then check out this app. You get your choice of four patients: three girls and a boy. Each has some pretty nasty problems that only you can fix.

With the free version, you’ll have to pull splinters, treat bee stings, put bandages on cuts and scrapes, blow some noses, take temperatures, put in eye drops, and listen to their hearts beating. There’s also a bright light to help with viewing the injuries. This is the First Aid Kit. You’ll actually hear and see the heart beat (a cute little cartoon in a heart shape) and see the mercury rise on the thermometer. With the tweezers, you’ll have to pull each splinter individually and place each one on the tray, which is helpfully held out by an anonymous nurse.

How It Works

There are more treatment options, like being able to measure blood pressure, administer a needle, take x-rays, and more, but those are in the Pro kit and are only accessible when you upgrade. Most of the colored gauze wraps and bandages are also locked.

The prescription pad on the right hand side will show you a checklist with all the treatments that are available and which ones you have done so far. When you have completed treatment for that patient you can move on to the next.

There’s a lot of repetition in this app but kids are sure to love it. It would be nice if some of the kids had different things wrong with them so that a player has to guess the treatment instead of just applying every treatment option on all the patients. Another option to help with the repetitive factor is to have the patients have different things wrong with them every time the app loads.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A fun way for kids to play doctor
  • Lots of treatment options
  • Colorful bandages and gauze wraps

Cons

  • A lot of repetition; the patients are always the same, with the same medical problems
  • All of the patients have the same things wrong with them; no variety among patients except for number and location of injuries
  • Four different patients

Final Verdict

This is a fun enough game that most kids will love. I really like that you get to pick the color of the bandages, although there aren’t many colors included in the free version. My daughter seemed to like the game, but didn’t play it over and over like some of the games she’s tried. If the developer made the patients have different afflictions it would be a lot better.
