Just In Time for Black Friday, eBay Launches Revamped RedLaser App
Just in time for Black Friday, eBay has released its redfined barcode scanner and price-comparison app, RedLaser — Barcode and QR Code Scan. There’s a lot to like about this app to price-compare a particular product item with other major chains selling it using a simple photo of its barcode. The scanner picks up code faster than ever, even if its a little blurry. With a new logo, interface, and millions of products in its database, the app also comes at a new unbeatable price: free. The app utlizes local product-price finders using TheFind.com, and more ubiquitous national chains to get the full spectrum of offers.
RedLaser scans QR codes, UPC, EAN, UPC-E, and now includes EAN-8. Other additions include the ability to check for food allergens and nutrition facts in grocery and food items, sourced by FoodEssentials and
DailyBurn. Like the previous versions, users can still wishlist items, check out product reviews and locate a copy of a book in local libraries.
Upon scanning items around the airports in Atlanta and Detroit, not every product had a price comparison, so don’t bank on that holiday wish list item to be found for a lower price—but it’s worth a try. Ebay owns RedLaser, so I am wary about the potential for product search and pricing to skew away from Ebay’s competitors.
