Wing Chun Martial Arts app review: this app will teach you martial arts wherever you go!

Reviews

Introduction

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art and a form of self-defense that uses both striking and grappling for specializing in real world, melee combat. The app is developed by Wing Chun expert martial artists and contains multiple high-quality instructional videos as well as explanations and demos. This app is free, but only holds a few lessons. To unlock all lessons you need to buy different apps, as the lessons are not available via in app purchases.

Learning Wing Chun, The Easy Way

Using instructional videos, it’s really easy to pick up Wing Chung in the comfort of your own home. You get two very quick demo videos but the how-to videos are slower and explain to you the use of a move in further detail. You also get an actual step-by-step delivery of the move.

The app is divided into three levels, but only a few of the level one lessons are available in this app. To purchase more lessons, you need to download a different app from the app store. For just level one lessons, you pay $4.99, but for the complete three levels your wallet will be $19.99 lighter.

High Quality Videos?

The App Store page promises high-quality videos. I haven’t found these in the free app. The videos were way too quick (the move was over before I even knew what was going on) and it’s being performed by two dudes in jeans.  On top of it all, the videos were not HD and it looked like they were streamed from a YouTube channel. All in all, the first level one videos look quite unprofessional, though I might be completely wrong as I am no Wing Chun specialist.

The guy who does the actual level three videos, which you can sample in this app as well, does know a lot about this martial arts style and he does look pretty professional!

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Tons of different video content
  • Learn Wing Chun in the comfort of your own home
  • No Ads
  • The later lessons look really professional

Cons

  • To buy the complete lesson set you need to pay money
  • Expanding your lessons force you to buy a different app
  • Some of the video look really unprofessional

Conclusion

If you want to be able to defend yourself, maybe this is the app for you. Clear videos and short videos of what the moves will look like are all supplied by this app. Some of the instructors are better than others, but all in all this is probably the best app out there to learn this martial arts form. The app is only around 30 MB in size and is designed for both iPad and iPhone devices. Even though the video quality is somewhat low, I still recommend this app.
