SeaWorld's Antarctica app review: an app to promote the latest ride in SeaWorld

Everybody loves theme parks, and I remember when I was young, when our local theme park had a new ride, I was so excited to go check it out that I didn’t sleep for days! Nowadays, kids don’t have to lose sleep over such a thing, as iOS is a great way to advertise your park’s latest attraction. SeaWorld's Antarctica by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment Inc. takes full advantage of this opportunity and has released an app that not only advertises the new ride, but also educates about the land that covers the South Pole.

All of the content is brought to you by SeaWorld, as they want you to come visit their park. This is luckily not massively overdone, and even though the name SeaWorld pops up now and again, the app never rubs it in your face.  There is a lot of content in this app, some of it readily available, while other content needs to be downloaded first (mainly videos and experiences as they take up quite a lot of space). Content includes the trailer for the new attraction, 30 different fun facts about the Antarctic region, a penguin personality quiz, some template videos where you can put yourself and your friends to experience Antarctica, and a photo moment where  you can make yourself look like a genuine explorer.

A music video is also available, though you will need to fill in your details to be able to watch it.

There are many ways to interact socially with SeaWorld. The Facebook, Twitter and YouTube feeds are readily available from within the app, and you can also easily subscribe to the newsletter. Every single experience you have created within the app is also available for you to share, using the same social network options that SeaWorld uses. To top this all off, you can buy a ticket to SeaWorld via the app, with all kinds of nice offers and savings for you to exploit. Finally, you can also find a link to the official park app, which downloads straight to your device.

Conclusion

This app is a great way to learn more about the Antarctic region, specifically penguins. It’s a very clever tool from SeaWorld to make people aware of their new attraction, and getting people involved with their social networks. The downside is that some content needs to be downloaded separately, which can take up a lot of time. The app is compatible just with the iPad and is just under 43 MB in size, though this excludes the downloadable content within the app.
