Title: Bible Memory App review: finally memorized 100 verses but at what cost

Meta Description: Three months with Bible Memory App (formerly Scripture Typer). Yes, I memorized 100+ verses. But the bugs, sync issues, and $9.99 paywall might make you think twice.

Three months, 127 verses, and one existential crisis

Started using Bible Memory App after bombing a Bible study discussion. Everyone's quoting Scripture left and right, and I'm sitting there googling "verses about faith" under the table. Downloaded this app that night out of pure shame. Three months later, I can recite 127 verses from memory, but my relationship with this app is... complicated.

First week felt like magic. Type the first letter of each word, and somehow your brain just gets it. T-f-l-o-e-w = The first letter of each word. Genius, right? Memorized John 3:16 in literally five minutes. Thought I'd discovered the holy grail of Bible memorization.

Then reality hit.

my daily battle with this app

Every morning at 6am, I open the app for my review session. Half the time it crashes immediately. Restart phone. Try again. Sometimes my verses from yesterday are gone. Sometimes they're duplicated. Once, Philippians 4:13 showed up 47 times in my review queue. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me... except figure out why this keeps happening.

The typing system actually works though. After three steps (Type It, Memorize It, Master It), you genuinely know the verse. Not just recognize it - actually know it. Last week at church, pastor asked for someone to quote Romans 8:28 and my hand shot up before my brain caught up. Nailed it word perfect. The old me would've been frantically flipping through my Bible.

But here's what nobody tells you - the free version is basically a demo. After a fixed number of verses, it requires purchase at $9.99 to unlock greater functionality. 5 Best Bible Memory Apps for 2025 (memorize the Bible faster!) Hit that wall at verse 15. They don't advertise this clearly anywhere.

what the community's saying

Reddit threads are fascinating. Found a guy who's memorized 2,000 verses using this app. Two thousand! Meanwhile, the App Store reviews are weirdly divided between cult-like devotion (4.8 stars from 20,000+ reviews) and people ready to throw their phones.

One user mentioned that longer passages like whole chapters start disappearing during review - the page goes blank and you have to start over. ‎The Bible Memory App on the App Store Happened to me with James chapter 1. Twenty minutes of work, gone.

But then you get reviews like this person who memorized 100 verses for witnessing to Mormons and says they can recite them "in random order" now. They started with 14 verses from Romans and ended up at 63, planning to reach 130 total. ‎The Bible Memory App on the App Store

The homeschool crowd absolutely loves this thing. Found multiple blog reviews from parents using it with their kids. Makes sense - the gamification with badges and points probably works great for children.

The weird addiction factor

Here's the thing nobody talks about - this app becomes weirdly addictive. The typing mechanism hijacks your brain somehow. You start thinking in first letters. Reading my Bible now, I automatically see t-f-l-o-e-w patterns everywhere. Is this healthy? No idea.

The review system is brilliant when it works. New verses daily, then every other day, then weekly, monthly, eventually yearly. Except sometimes it forgets and makes you review the same verse seventeen times in one day. Romans 12:2 is burned into my retina at this point.

Users consistently praise the "scripture typer" feature where you type the first letter of each word, saying the app shows the next word and tells you whether you got the first letter correct or not. 5 Best Bible Memory Apps for 2025 (memorize the Bible faster!) This really is the app's killer feature. Nothing else does it quite the same way.

My verdict after 127 verses

Would I recommend Bible Memory App? If you're serious about memorizing Scripture and have $10 to spare, probably yes. If you expect a polished, bug-free experience, absolutely not.

I've tried five other Bible memory apps. This one's the most effective and the most frustrating. It's like having a brilliant but unreliable study partner. When it works, you'll memorize faster than you thought possible. When it doesn't, you'll want to hurl your phone.

Still using it daily. Still getting annoyed daily. But I've memorized more Scripture in three months than in the previous three years combined. Make of that what you will.

Pro tip: screenshot your progress regularly. When (not if) the app loses your data, you'll at least know what you had memorized. And don't start with whole chapters unless you enjoy suffering.

The $9.99 for Pro? Worth it if you're going to stick with it past a month. The heat maps alone saved me hours of wondering why I kept missing certain words. Just don't expect those premium features to fix the technical issues. They won't.

I am experiencing an issue with the app on my iPad. The ranking numbers are not updating, and the verses are not displaying at all. I have synced multiple times, but there has been no change. Interestingly, my iPhone has all my verses, but the ranking numbers still do not update. I have asked for assistance but no response yet. Thank you!

I just bought the app and a Bible translation, but there is no tutorial to help someone new to the app to learn how to use it. Really disappointing. I can find everything, but there’s nothing to tell you how to check off a verse once you have it memorized, nothing to tell you if you can save them or how. Very confusing 😖

Very poor set-up features. Font size is about a 2pt. Changed font in settings and still 2pt. NOT user-friendly.
