Cubis app review: a puzzle game that will grab you and won’t let you go!

Introduction

Puzzle games are still the bread and butter in the App Store. These games are accessible, easy to play for just a few minutes, and as addictive as can be. Usually not much explanation is needed and they are compatible with players of all ages. There is no need for me to explain what a puzzle game actually entails as I’m sure everyone who reads this will have played either Candy Crush Saga or Bejeweled. Developer FreshGames, LLC has tried to brash the simple match-three concept with its own take on the genre by releasing Cubis, a 3D match-three puzzle game for iPad and iPhone that will challenge your special thinking while tickling your addiction bone.

Gameplay

Compared to other match-three games, the concept of Cubis is a little bit more difficult. You will have to  shoot blocks from two different axis and try to connect three blocks of the same color. This can be tricky, as when you touch another block it will move one space further. Because this game isn’t flat like other games, but in 3D, this can cause blocks to fall and create huge chain reactions. These can sometimes come as a surprise, but the more experienced players will be able to plan these moves ahead and score huge amounts of points by structuring the different blocks in a way these reactions will happen. There are also special blocks that, when destroyed, will garner more points, helping you to pass the level, as point thresholds are being used just like in other games with a similar level structure.

You can see this version of the game as the free demo version. You can unlock all the different features, including more levels, different blocks to destroy and daily tournaments for a mere $0.99. In the free version you will only have access to world one, which holds 20 levels. By upgrading you can get access to 60 more levels, which should be easily worth the money. Hopefully the developer will also add some way to unlock new levels as in Candy Crush, as I’m sure more people would like to play this game further.
