Bricks app review: a classic game with a clever twist

Reviews

Introduction

There are tons of different games available in the App Store, and most of them really don’t bring anything new to the table. Most of these games are simply a copy of a game that has been designed a long time ago and are simply released with a new coat of paint. When I see a game in the App Store that goes against this, I am the first one to give the developer praise. Developer Stephen Sowole deserves all the praise that I am about to give him, as he has completely changed a game that has been copied and cloned many times in the last few years and made it fun, fresh and interesting again. Bricks is a game that looks and plays like the classic Arkanoid, but adds a whole new layer of addiction by changing some simple rules.

Gameplay

Since the classic version of this game was played with a joystick or a directional pad, not all versions of this kind of game are played as easy on a touch screen. This is where the developer deserves his first mountain of praise. You simply tap where you want the paddle to be. This is much better than just sliding your finger, as you will block the screen when you do that. In bricks you simply have to keep a ball in the air while breaking all kinds of bricks with it. This concept is old as time. Where the game completely breaks this mold is that it adds color to the game. Breaking a few blocks of the same color without hitting another color will grant you a bonus, which can range a bigger paddle, to a complete shake up of the field.

Graphics and Combos

The game itself is designed using Apple’s design philosophy. Everything is kept super simple and you will never be confused. The game is completely played on a white background. The game gets really interesting a bit later in the game, when blocks will also appear under your paddle. Your score is determined by the order you break the block in, and a combo meter with multiplier will show up next to your score. Keep it up long enough and you will score big!

Conclusion

For anyone that is a fan of the block breaker genre, this is the time to start playing again. Bricks is a super fun and addictive game and you will be trying to break your score and find ways to get an ever-larger combo. The controls are very easy and optimized for the touchscreen. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and fits perfectly with the design Apple is so well known for. The game is only 2.6 MB, which is impressive, even for such a simple game.
