Ancient Continent app review: a nice blend between MOBA and Tower Defense

Reviews

Introduction

For people who don’t know, a MOBA is a Massive Online Battle Arena, a genre made famous by the immensely popular League of Legends. A tower defense game is a game where you place towers on the side of a path to make sure your base doesn’t get overrun by monsters. Just to iterate, the game I’m reviewing today is neither, but blends the two different genres in a very clever way. Ancient Continent by ZHIZHI TIAN is a game designed for iPad and iPhone, but it suffers from some massive issues which I will highlight later in this review. The app is just under 100 MB, but is it worth getting this app at all? Read on to find out why you should and why you shouldn’t.

Gameplay

Let me start by explaining the gameplay to you a little bit. In this game, you will need to choose a guardian (or a hero, as I will call them from now on) to protect your base. Wave after wave the enemies will come through and you will have to make sure you kill them all. You can work together with other heroes to help you to get rid of the threat, or you can take other players on in PVP matches, where you play against other players (PVP means player versus player). The app offers 27 different levels of gameplay and difficulty will vastly vary between these levels. There are 12 different heroes you can pick from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics of the game are really colorful and nice to look at. The sound of the game fits really well with the chaos of the battlefield and with the art style of the game. The game does have a few huge cons in my opinion. First of all, the game is very poorly translated, so half the time things will be in Chinese while other times you will simply have no clue what the instructions mean. Another huge con is that half the time you can’t log in, with a vague error code being given to you as a user. This is enough for me to not suggest this app to anyone.

Cons

  • Terrible connectivity issues
  • Horrible translation

Conclusion

I would never suggest this game to anyone at the moment, simply because connectivity issues are simply too annoying. The game is also poorly translated, and there is no way some pretty graphics and a ton of content will make up for that. The game does look beautiful and offers a lot of variety, but only if you get it to work. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and is just under 100 MB.
