Timberman app review: awesome and oh so addictive

Introduction

It doesn’t happen often that I stumble over a game accidentally by clicking on someone’s link on Facebook, but in case of Timberman this was probably the best thing that happened to me in terms of lucky finds. This game by Pawel Jedrysiak is an absolute gem developed for both iPad and iPhone, and while it seems to use a similar scoring mechanic than Flappy Bird and all of its clones, this game really outdoes every single one of the games in the genre. As far as extremely difficult, punishing games go, Timberman is absolutely the fairest. Unlike the other games that use a similar scoring mechanic, if you die in this game, it is your own fault. The app weighs in at just over 25 MB and is available for free.

Gameplay

The gameplay is definitely where the game excels. I haven’t had such a great and addictive gameplay experience since I played Candy Crush and I don’t think I will have one like this for a long while. You are a lumberjack, or as the game likes to refer to you, a timberman. You will have to chop down a tree, but you do this slice by slice. This means the tree will come down slowly, and the only thing you have to do is avoid the branches that show up on either right or left side of the tree. In the top of the screen there is a bar that measures your speed. You are Game Over when it is empty, so you will have to keep rhythm to win this game. If a branch hits you, and it will, you will die as well.

Graphics and Sound

In the tradition of all games that play like this, Timberman has hold true to the 8-bit style that is used for these kind of games. This goes for the graphics as well as the music. The chip tune sounds are a perfect fit for the game and the menu music is great. In addition, the game has a reward system, as you will unlock different skins for your timberman as you get more points in the game. These are just aesthetic and do not offer any gameplay advantages.

If you are ever going to listen to what I have to say, do it now. Timberman is definitely better than Flappy Bird and deserves your download. I had so much fun playing this game that I forgot all about time and nearly missed my classes. The graphics are in the same style as all the other games using this concept, but the gameplay is so much better. The game app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and is just over 25 MB. You can’t miss this game!
