iBeacon technology ready in Los Angeles and San Diego

Two weeks ago there were reports that Major League Baseball wanted to install iBeacon technology in 20 ballparks for the start of 2014 season. It’s now being reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres have got the Bluetooth transmitters up and running.

iBeacon technology allows iPhone users to get location specific alerts when they’re in ballparks through the At the Ballpark app. MLB hasn’t commented on how the technology would work but it could offer things like loyalty programs to offer discounts on concessions and fan gear. It could also help those visiting the stadium find their seats. It could even start sending notifications to the user about new offers on products like food and drink.

iBeacon is a technology made by Apple and can be used by iOS 7 devices, OS X computers, and those on the Android operating system. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy, a new technology that is designed for things like this and with secondary devices like smart watches.
