Apple has applied for another patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, called "Intelligent Automated Assistant" and surrounds Siri, a feature found on the latest iPhones and iPads. Apple's description of the technology was a system that "engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural dialogue, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions." When you look at the filing, you can see that a lot of the features have been detailed and Apple even shows pictures of the Siri application before it was purchased by Apple. One of the inventors mentioned is Dag Kittlaus, who was a co-founder for the company that first made Siri and was then acquired by Apple. He left Apple after the iPhone 4S was released. According to AppleInsider.com, one of the key features mentioned by Apple is the unified interface - the company believes that having multiple applications that have different interfaces can confuse users, so have tried to simplify it to make it easier for users. In Siri, almost everything that you ask will be handled by the app itself, and keeps with the theme: Apple avoided using different applications for events, texts, and other applications. Apple also touches on the artificially-intelligent side of Siri - for instance if you tell Siri to send him/her a text message while you're mid-call, it'll assume you mean the person you're calling.
