Apple-1 computer sells for $365,000 at auction

A working Apple-1 computer - the third sold at auction in the last year or so - has sold for $365,000 at Christie’s auction house in New York on Thursday. The estimated price for the Ricketts Apple-1 Personal Computer, so named after the original owner Charles Ricketts, was estimated to sell at $400,000 to $600,000. It was sold by Steve Jobs to Charles Ricketts out of the Jobs’ home. The Rembrandt Society, VSB fund, Mondriaan Fund, and the BankGiro Loterij, among others, helped fund the buy. The computer was sold originally for $600. Less than 50 original Apple-1s are believed to exist now, out of the few hundred they made. In October of this year, the Henry Ford Organization paid $905,000 for one of the same computers. They were all made by Steve Wozniak, the engineer who co-founded the company with Steve Jobs in the 1970s. In order to finance the production of the computers, Wozniak sold a calculator for $500 and Jobs sold his VW van.
