Threaded app review: a well-designed magazine about design

Reviews

Introduction

Magazines come in all shapes and forms in the App Store, and there are so many different subjects for these magazines that you will never find a subject untouched. The releases of these magazines also come on different times, and the costs of these magazines can be all over the place. Most of these outlets also offer subscriptions, which can be quite pricey and usually they renew automatically, so watch out!

The best iPad apps for interior design

Design and Usability

I expected a magazine about design to excel in designing a perfect magazine app and I wasn’t wrong. The app looks absolutely stunning and is really easy to use. The only downside I can find about the magazine is that there is no interactivity whatsoever in the app, which is something I expected a design magazine to at least try and implement. Animation or interactivity would definitely add a lot to the magazine, and would push the value even further.

The app is very easy to use, and it works very similarly to other magazines you might have tried from the Newsstand app. The app starts by giving you the instructions of use for the app, so there isn’t anything that can go wrong when using this app.

Pricing and Subscriptions

As of now, there are four different issues available within the app. The pilot issue is completely free and holds 30 pages of information about design, and this will give you a good view on what to expect from the other issues the app offers. The other three issues, numbered 13 to 15, are available for download and they are priced at $3.99. You can also buy a subscription from within the app, basically giving you access to two issues a year, and this will set you back $6.99, saving you the amount of one dollar on a yearly bases.

Conclusion

For all the design fanatics out there, look no further. If you like to read about design, this is the magazine for you. The only downside is that the magazine is only released twice per year, but the magazine is beautifully designed and has a lot of fun reading material. The ease of use is also very important, and it works like a charm.  Each single issue will set you back $3.99, while a year’s subscription costs $6.99. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone, and without downloading any magazines, the app is just over 5 MB. This review is based on the Pilot version of the magazine, which doesn't contain interactivity. The other issues do have interactivity implemented, but this has not been tested.
