The Fox and the Crane app review: A great multilingual fairy tale

Reviews

Introduction

Most of the interactive story books on the App Store are only available in one language. The problem with this for most children is that they would prefer to read a story book in their native tongue, meaning that if you’re not raised with English, most of the story books on the App Store will not be very accessible for you. If you search hard enough, you might be able to find one or two interactive story books that have been translated in other languages. This is also the case with the Russian fairy tale called The Fox and the Crane, by Mumuin.com. Not only is this story book available in English, but this app, designed for iPad only, is also available in Russian, US English, Dutch, German and French!

What does the app have to offer?

Apart from offering the story in many languages, and delivering a great story about getting what you deserve, the book also has a lot of other things to offer. First of all, the story isn’t very long, but in this case it’s not a very big deal. Within the story, a collection of mini games is intertwined, all of which are playable within the story. They actually are a big part of the store, even though you don’t need to complete them to progress. You can always skip them by simply tapping the arrow in the bottom of the screen. You can also go back in the story at any point or jump back to the main menu.

Graphics and Sound

Another really good thing about this app is that the graphics on every page are completely hand drawn and animated. Almost every object on each page is interactive and looks stunning. The story is fully narrated in all the languages mentioned in the introduction paragraph. This makes the story very accessible to kids from all over the world. And if all of this wasn't enough to get you excited, some of the interactive elements in the story make sounds like the fence that has different tones to each plank used to build it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Really nice art style
  • Tons of interactivity and games
  • Available in many languages

Cons

  • The story itself is a bit on the short side
  • Quite pricey

Conclusion

As far as interactive storybooks go, this one is definitely worth a look, especially if your kids are not native English speakers. The only downside is that the book is quite pricey for being on the short side. The app was free at the time of writing, but is now available for $2.99, which I find quite expensive. The production values are high, and there are a few fun games to play within the story. The app is only compatible with iPad and due to all the languages in the app, it weighs just over 165 MB.
