What would you do? app review: a tower defense game in three dimensions

Reviews

Introduction

As an English teacher, I am always looking for different ways to engage my students to help them learn the English language. There are many ways to do that, but as most of them don’t speak English very well, I have to be creative. I always look for fun things to do in the App Store, and sometimes I find something that fits in perfectly with the lessons I have been teaching my students. The same thing happened when I reviewed the app called What would you do? This app by Free Style simply gives you a choice, and you will have to choose between one or the other. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and weigh in at just under 30 MB.

What it Offers

The app simply shows you a statement and allows you to pick one or the other answer. If you are connected to the Internet, the app will also show what the other people using the app have chosen in a nice comparison of percentages. This shows you if you are the odd one of the human race or just voting what most people do. This is obviously not how I use this app in the class room, but it sure is a great time waster for if you don’t have anything to do. You can save your favorites as well as search the app by keywords, finding any question that might be relevant for the situation you are in at that time.

How I Use it in the Classroom

So, what I do is I change the name of the game first to “Would you rather?” Then I will pick the 10 most relevant questions and write them on the board. Of course, it would be too easy for the children to just pick one or the other, so I turn it into a writing exercise, having the kids explain to me why they picked the one they did. This is not only just a good writing exercise, but also a great way for the children to exercise their creative thinking and their decision-making.

Conclusion

This iPhone and iPad app is just simply great fun to play with friends, alone, or in the class room. There are tons of different questions in the app and it will keep you busy for a long time. The fact it compares your answer with other people’s answers online is a great addition and you can see if you’re the oddball or not. The app is designed greatly and a search function and the option to favorite questions are welcome additions.
