iCan Toilet Training Program app review: fun but watch out for drowned devices!

Reviews

Introduction

iCan Toilet Training Program is an iPad and iPhone app designed to get little kids excited for using the potty. It does tracking, has 3 videos to choose from while your child is pottying, and then three rewards to choose from following a successful potty trip. It's well-put-together, and well-thought-out.

Potty Learning Goes High-Tech

iCan Toilet Training Program takes a hygiene skill to the next level with high-tech learning. Every kid these days who has had the opportunity, loves to play on their parent’s iPhone or iPad. They are little sponges, and love to emulate grown-ups. This app sets up an individual profile with your child’s name, gender, and wakeful times. You can then set reminders for every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or hour.

Following a successful use of the potty, your child is rewarded with one minute of game play, which you set in the settings. One minute is plenty, but if you would like to let them play longer, you can adjust this.

What's Lacking, and What's Annoying

iCan Toilet Training Program has a great start, but you have to tap each menu option twice. Once you finally get to the next step, if, for example you select that you need to use the washroom, you are pre-selected with three potty attempt or waiting to pee videos. One is a train, one a story, and the other a news clip. Each one plays for three minutes and you cannot fast forward, skip, or move on without waiting the three minutes. On one hand, I understand that they did this to ensure that the child sat long enough to have a good attempt, but on the other hand, if your child goes and is done, they cannot get their reward before the three minutes is up.

Once the three minutes is up, and your sanity returns, your little pottier gets to choose a game. They can choose from marble run, save the fish, and bubble pop. Each is easy for little learners, and my two-year-old seems to enjoy them.

Another thing is that this encourages children to hold an expensive device while sitting on the toilet. I would encourage parents to hold the device, and let the child play the game once they are out of the washroom to avoid drowned devices!

Final Thoughts

iCan Toilet Training Program is an iPad and iPhone app that encourages your child to potty learn through positive emulation. The app is straightforward and well-designed, but you must wait the three minutes for the train, story, or news to stop to move on. It also encourages children to take an expensive device into the washroom and onto the toilet. I would encourage parents to hold the device so as to avoid drowning the electronic in the toilet bowl!
