LouderTV app review: a new use for your mobile device

Reviews

Introduction

It seems that eventually most people will start to experience mild to moderate problems with their hearing as they age and if this describes you then here's an app that may be able to help. The LouderTV app is designed for your iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone and is meant to provide you with basic help hearing the TV without disturbing everyone else. For the person that is having problems hearing the TV needs to be loud but for everyone else that kind of volume can be annoying. This app works as a solution for everyone so you can all watch TV in harmony at the level that works for each of you.

An Alternative Tool

Hearing aids are obviously designed to help those who are hard of hearing, however they can be pretty expensive and you may not need a hearing aid rather just some simple assistance. The way the app works is that it features built-in self-tuning so that it will allow you to fit it at home, unlike a traditional hearing aid. What’s also great is that if you are just suffering from mild hearing loss this tool won’t make things too loud, which could potentially damage your hearing further.

In the app's last update there were some small enhancements made however this was quite some time ago. The app still doesn't have a customer rating but unfortunately the comments aren't very positive. One user has complained that even after investing in expensive headphones and working for hours to fine tune it the app was virtually useless. So let’s take a close look.

The User Experience

What LouderTV offers is 128-frequency bands amplification base on the eight major bands. There is single adjustment at a time and single frequency so that you are able to capture your exact hearing profile. The app can offer one-on-one conversation assistance and simple noise reduction. The way it works is that you will need to attach a headset to your mobile device and then put the device near the TV. Be sure to have the microphone pointing towards the TV. The developer suggests that you do your tuning in a quiet room first and then make the fine adjustments once you are listening to the TV program.

The developer also suggests that you use it with an in-ear headset, and that you remove it every two hours and take a 15 minute break. Because I don’t suffer from hearing loss it’s hard for me to comment on the quality of the app but I will say that the user interface is simple and straight-forward without many added features.

Final Thoughts

The LouderTV app for your iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone provides those with hearing loss a chance to enjoy TV and conversations in a way that is comfortable for them unfortunately it seems this app, found in the Medical section of the App Store, needs a bit more fine-tuning.
