2D animation has its roots dating back to the late 19th century when flipbooks and folioscope were created. From there, the magic of 2D animation was transformed for the world to see through the brilliance of Walt Disney in the early 1900s.

In time, 2D animation eventually gave way to 3D animation. Yet, instead of fading into extinction as other “outdated” technology has done, 2D animation is still very relevant in many different niches.

Let’s take a look at some of the differences between 2D and 3D animation along with some of the reasons why you should consider using 2D animation over 3D.

Some Differences Between 2D and 3D

The obvious difference between these types of animation is that one has two dimensions (height and length) and the other has three dimensions (height, length, and width).

With 2D, we get a flat looking object where 3D makes objects look more “alive.” A simple geometrical example of this is a triangle would be 2D and a pyramid would be 3D. 3D animation gives more texture and depth.

In mathematical terms, 2D is based on an x-axis and y-axis. 3D is based on an x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis.

There are many other intricate differences between these two dimensions, but you get the gist of it.

Benefits For Using 2D

As mentioned above, not only is 2D still relevant but it also has many benefits over 3D.

When creating 2D animation, you can either use paper or software. Whereas, 3D animation requires expensive software.

If you prefer, there are some reputable companies like 2D animation studio that can create the 2D animation for you. Once again, even outsourcing animations are less expensive via the 2D route than the 3D route.

When creating animations for business purposes like presentations or advertising, 2D animation is a very cost effective approach compared to the higher priced 3D animation. Furthermore, the 2D animation still provides professional and engaging content even if it’s not as “alive” as 3D.

Another benefit for 2D compared to 3D is the timeframe. When creating 2D animations it takes less time to complete the project than with a 3D animation. This is important especially if you are on a shorter deadline to complete a project.

Lastly, 2D animations offer the traditional cartoon look and feel that we all grew up on. It tends to connect to a larger audience than 3D animations might.

The Choice is Yours

There are many differences between 2D animation and 3D animation. There are also many benefits for 2D and 3D as well. Ultimately, the choice comes down to each individual or project.

If you are looking for a timely, professional and less expensive option then 2D animation is the best option.
