'Rogue Racing' Offers High-Speed Thrills & Dizzying Array of Custom Cars

Rogue Racing from Glu Games Inc. offers gamers the opportunity to customize the cars they race by modifying the engine, exhaust, tires, hoods, and spoilers. The cars and the parts, as well as the race courses, have to be earned and/or paid for. The graphics are sharp and the game-play is smooth. Glu Games has made the most of the iOS touch-screen format with four different control settings. Unfortunately, although many free-to-play apps offer incentives to those who pay for them, Rogue Racing is exceptionally difficult to really play without paying money.

One cool aspect of the game is that although you begin with only two courses, you can choose different routes to race through on those courses (and all other courses). You can also choose between three different types of races: “Street,” “Time Attack,” and “Elimination.” “Street” is your standard race against AI Cars. In “Time Attack” you race against the clock to reach checkpoints. “Elimination” is a kind of combination of the first two: you race AI cars to reach a checkpoint, and the last car to reach each checkpoint is eliminated. “Time Attack” can be very difficult to win without using Nitro, that ever-popular, never-defined speed-booster of race cars. You can use a maximum of five Nitro per race. You pay for Nitro, cars, car parts, and courses, in two forms of currency: Coins and Keys. Every time you finish a race, you earn coins (the higher you place, the more coins you get, but even if you finish last you earn a few). You win Keys each time you reach a new level, but other than that, you have to pay money. You can use Keys to pay for gas, which you need in order to race, but gas will also refill over time.

Rogue Racing is an entertaining game but hard to really enjoy unless you pay, and there are so many different cars and modifications available for purchase that it’s hard to really tell how much better each one is from the last.
