The best iPhone apps for Halloween

My first impression in this glassesoff app review I have to add, that later versions of glasses off app reduced initial test duration, perhaps due to improved testing technique, considering rising population of this app and legit scientific background of used method, proven to be effective to a lot of users.

Eye Test

Glasses Off: Read Without Glasses initially tests your eyes using several rows of the letter ‘E’ in various rotations. You must tap the correct rotation to pass the test, and it is repeated for several rounds. This was pretty boring, but I kept waiting for the next game. It never came, but perhaps in the paid portion it does.

After several rounds of the rotating ‘E’ I was presented with the fading ‘E.’ The ‘E’ was presented alone in various rotations with varying contrasts to near transparency. This was slightly frustrating, but it could also be related to my eyesight. You can see in the screen shot with my results that I scored a high 2.

You can also see that there are 3 levels with level 1 being ability to read with effort under strong light, level 2 being ability to read with some effort under normal light, and level 3 being ability to read effortlessly under normal light.

Does it Work?

Glasses Off: Read Without Glasses is based on Dr. Ray Gottleib’s book ‘Read Without Glasses Method.’ According to studies, some results improve from 20/200 to 20/40 at which point you no longer need reading glasses. Eighty percent of the people who tried the lessons reported improvement in their vision with no longer needing reading glasses at all, and others returning to the eye charts every once and a while for a refresher.

I think it can be correct to speculate that as any anther scientifically based technique this particular app benefits from continuous tests on how to improve eyesight, as it being the same reason it performs individual reading glasses test to every particular user to prescribe individual treatment according to collected data.

I haven’t gone through the courses myself, and I wear glasses for distance. If it works as well as the studies indicate though, then it would be worth a try to not have to wear reading glasses any longer! A lot of patients who go for laser eye correction surgery end up needing reading glasses. I would be curious to see if once they went through this eye strengthening program that would be the case!

Final Thoughts

The Glasses Off: Read Without Glasses app for iPhone and iPod touch is an introduction to the full program. I love that you can go through the test for free without committing to anything. If the 80-to-90 percent success rate is accurate, then the $9.99 in-app purchase for the full program would be well worth it as that is only a small fraction of the cost of glasses or the inconvenience of not being able to read!
