Swamp People app review: a fun game based upon the hit show

Reviews

Introduction

I've never heard of the show Swamp People from the History Channel, but I still was pretty intrigued by the name of this game, which was the reason I downloaded it from the App Store. Developed for iPad and iPhone by A&E Television Networks Mobile, Swamp People depicts the life of the people living in the bayous of Louisiana, where they hunt alligators. Not only will you get to hunt these deadly creatures, you also get to set up your camp and customize everything in it to your heart’s content.

Gameplay

Even though the game is based on a very non-interactive TV show, the gameplay for the game itself is actually quite all right. You start the game in a tournament, trying to prove yourself and catch the most and biggest gators out there. You can set traps while you drive your boat around with the left stick on the screen, and you can fire your gun with another analog stick on the right of the screen. You can also play the game with touch control, but as an old school gamer I prefer the analog stick control scheme. When you see a trap icon, simply tap it and set a trap. You will be warned when a gator has sprung it so you can return and shoot the animal. These traps are upgradeable and you will get access to better traps as you go along.

Other gameplay features

Besides the tournaments and hunting excursions you will take your character on, there is a lot of other gameplay to expect in this game. Firstly, you get to create and customize your character to look like you, or like a proper redneck, and you can create your camp as you see fit too! All weapons and boats in the game are upgradeable, making them more useful in your hunt for the biggest alligators in Louisiana. Finally there are also all kinds of races you can do against different other AI swampers, on a total of eight different courses, all set in the swamps.  All of this is brought to you in decent graphics with excellent sound.

Conclusion

After playing this game, I really want to watch the show on the History Channel, so I think their marketing worked. The game is fun to play, has loads of things to do and is very customizable, meaning you will be playing it for hours and hours, which is not a bad thing for a free game. The game is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and offers in-app purchases, but these are not needed to enjoy the game to the fullest. If you have seen the show, let us know in the comments what the game is like compared to the show, as if the show is only half as good, I would recommend that too.
