Medical Terminology Flashcards app review: learn from 13 premade decks or create your own

Reviews

Introduction

Whether you’re a medical student or a professional who is simply looking to bolster your knowledge of medical terminology then you’d be wise to take a look at this iPhone and iPad app as it offers thousands of flashcards that you can use as a simple-yet-effective learning tool.

The best iPhone apps for nurses

This is a reasonably decent addition to the Medical category of the App Store; however, I can’t help but feel as if a little more effort could have gone into the overall presentation, perhaps including some better quality graphics and some nice anatomical images to accompany the flashcards.

Your Own Pint-Sized Med School

Medical Terminology Flashcards contains literally thousands of different premade flashcards that act as a fairly extensive compilation of medical terminology, including abbreviations, prefixes, and suffixes across a range of different subjects.

The best first aid apps for iPhone and iPad

There are 13 different decks of cards included with this app, which cover the following areas of the human body:

  • Intro Medical Terms
  • Body Structure
  • Integumentary System
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Blood and the Lymphatic System
  • Respiratory System
  • Digestive System
  • Urinary System
  • Reproductive System
  • Endocrine System
  • Nervous System
  • The Eye and Ear

So you should find everything that you need to at least home in on a couple of specific areas and sharpen up your knowledge there.

Create Your Own Flashcards

In addition to this premade content you can also create your own flashcards. I do think that this is a good idea but I wonder how motivated people are going to be to use this feature because of how basic and plain the layout is.

Either way, any cards that you guess incorrectly are automatically added to a Focus On deck that you can then use to shore up any holes in your knowledge and understanding. In my opinion, this is a far better option than having to spend a bunch of time creating your own cards.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Includes thousands of medical terminology, abbreviation, prefix, and suffix cards
  • Learn from 13 pre-made decks covering specific subjects
  • Create your own cards for a customized learning experience
  • Cards marked incorrect are automatically added to a Focus On deck
  • Use the Focus On deck to shore up any gaps in your knowledge and understanding
  • Covers everything from basic introductory medical terms to the endocrine and lymphatic system, and the eye and ear
  • Features a very basic interface so that you can more easily focus on the content

Cons

  • Anatomical images and a generally improved user-interface would almost certainly improve this app by leaps and bounds, but it is still reasonable for the asking price of $0.99

Final Words

Given its price, I wouldn’t expect miracles from Medical Terminology Flashcards, but if you’re looking for a simple, no-nonsense way of learning some more medical terms on your iPhone and iPad then I would recommend at least placing it on your ‘maybe’ pile before shopping around a little more.
