Slide and Place Pieces

Caillou House of Puzzles uses the slide and place puzzle method many other apps have used. This is a great technique that is more true to physical puzzles; however, it can be difficult for little fingers.

Best iphone and ipad apps

I figure it gives you an excuse to sit with your little puzzle constructors and help them with sliding their fingers. The pieces do not click into place, but if you are very close to where the piece goes, then it will stick.

Even I had trouble with that sometimes though, as I would set a piece where it should go and it would not be exact enough to stick.

Within Caillou’s room, there are four puzzles that you can choose from and each has three difficulties. The Easy setting has nine pieces, the Medium setting has 16, and the Hard has 20. As I mentioned, the pieces can be tricky to stick, so I would start with the Easy setting regardless to get a feel for the app.

Final Thoughts

Caillou House of Puzzles is an iPad and iPhone app that has six different rooms with four (give or take) puzzles in each. It allows a free trial of Caillou’s room, and after that you can opt to purchase the app or continue with the four puzzles of three difficulties.

As far as kids' puzzle apps go, this is a pretty good one. It uses the slide-and-place format that is similar to physical puzzles, and makes it feel more real. This can be difficult for little fingers, however, and I had difficulty as well until I got a feel for the pieces.

I would suggest trying it on your own first, and seeing if you can do it, and then sitting down with your little one to do the puzzles together. My six-year-old loved it, and my two-year-old enjoyed it with mommy’s assistance. Overall, it's a fun app.
