Lock 'n' Roll app review: a truly addictive puzzle game

Reviews

Introduction

If you're looking for a puzzle game to keep your mind sharp while you procrastinate, wait on someone, or sit on the porcelain throne, Lock 'n' Roll is one game that you should definitely grab on your iPhone or iPad.

This brilliant, addictive puzzle game has been perhaps the most-used game app on my iPhone, and is certainly the only game app that I've continued to play for more than four years now, so I figured it's time to give it a review so others may join in and get as much out of it as I have.

You can find this app located in the Games section of the App Store, where it can be downloaded for free.

Let's take a look at how it works.

Interface & Advertising

Lock 'n' Roll only takes up 6.2 MB of space on your iOS device which makes it fairly easy to keep this app because you know you would rather just back up and delete a couple of images rather than this game.

The user interface for this lovely game is simple yet stunning, transporting the user to another world. I remember when I first started playing this game, there were pop-up ads that would appear on the screen during the game, and they detracted a little from the user experience. However, the developers have worked on this and now there are ads only on a bar at the top of the screen and there are no more pop-up ads.

Gameplay Experience

The outcome of this game is based on two factors: luck and skill. The software generates four dice at any given time. Each dice constitutes one of four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow) and four numbers from one through four.

The objective of the game is to arrange these dice on a 4x4 grid in various combinations sorted by number and color. Players receive points for increasingly better combinations but once the dice are placed on the grid, they are locked and cannot be moved. If you make certain difficult combinations, those dice will be cleared from the board to make room for new ones.

If you earn enough points, you can earn a Joker card which can be placed anywhere on the grid (including on already locked dice). This Joker card acts as a Doppelganger for any other dice and can potentially help you clear up a large section of the board if placed strategically.
