Translate Professional app review: instant translation for better communication

Traveling can be a great experience but not if you don’t speak the language of the place you’re visiting. A foreign language is not something you can learn in a few days so it makes sense to have something that can do the translation for you. Translate Professional is an excellent app that can help you translate common phrase in multiple different languages. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Whether you’re traveling for business or for pleasure, Translate Professional can help make your experience in a foreign country an experience to remember. There are other apps in the App Store that help you to learn the basics of another language, but what makes Translate Professional unique is that it can translate multiple different languages; most other apps focus on one specific language.

Although this is one of the better translating apps, it does have a couple of issues. There are ads in the free version which you can get rid of if you make an in-app purchase of one of the available translation voices from the App Store. In the free version you only have access to written phrases so if you want to hear what they sound like in spoken form you must purchase a voice over. A bigger issue is that not all of the languages that can be selected in the app actually work. I came across several that simply said "language not available." This begs the question: why include languages in the list that don’t work? This app will require 14.4 MB of available space on your iOS device

How it Works

When you first open the app you’ll see a screen that’s divided into two sections. On the left-hand side is a list of categories into which the phrases have been divided. The idea here is to make it easy for you to quickly find a phrase for the right situation. Are you trying to rent a car? Then you’ll want to use the Renting a car category to find a list of appropriate phrases. The developers have done a good job here of choosing some useful categories and popular phrases within each one of these categories.  When you tap on a category the view will switch to a preview of the available phrases.

On the right side of the screen there are three subsections. At the top is a search bar and here you can type in any word to get a translation of that word in your chosen language. The phrases we talked about above are definitely helpful but they won’t cover every situation that you may come across. This feature covers the gaps. Underneath the search bar is the settings tab where you can change the language of translation, while not every language works most of the major languages do. The rest of the screen is a viewing box where the phrases on the left side are displayed when you tap to open them. There are certainly a lot of useful tools here.
