A New Way to Learn

There’s nothing new about Wikipedia: this online encyclopedia has been the go-to source of knowledge for years now. The developers of Learn Discovery - Mindmap of Wikipedia have created an app that presents Wikipedia content in an innovative, all-new way and it works very well. There are lots of other apps dedicated to presenting Wikipedia content, but none of them come close to matching this app for its visual presentation and clever way of linking articles together.

One of the coolest features of this app is the Nearby tab: no matter where you are, as long as you have an Internet connection, this app can quickly present you with a visual map of nearby places. This is a great way to explore the area if you’re on vacation, but it’s also an excellent way to learn about the historical significance of places of interest in your local area. It’s amazing to learn about the rich history that’s right under your nose that you never knew was there. There are no instructions in the app itself but there is a detailed write-up in the App Store that explains how to use the app quite well.  This app will require 31 MB of free space on your iOS device.

How it Works

When you open the Learn Discovery - Mindmap of Wikipedia app the first thing you’ll see is a search bar that looks just like any search bar you’ve ever seen and it works pretty much the same way. You can type in any search you like in the search bar if you know what you’re looking for, but there are also a couple of other ways to search for information in this app. Underneath the  search bar app you’ll find two icons that allow you to search Wikipedia articles a little differently: Nearby, and Atlas.

If you tap on the Nearby icon the app will present a standard GPS map with points pinned to the map that represent Wikipedia articles on points of interest near you. If you tap once on a pin it will tell you what that point of interest is and you can tap on the information button to open up a mindmap. If you choose the Atlas icon instead you’ll be able to access any saved maps that you’ve explored previously. This option also has a featured section which provides some suggested topics of interest.

As mentioned above what really makes this app stand out is the visual way it presents information. When you open a point on the map it not only presents a tiny picture of that particular point, it also has several other points to other related articles running from this original article in a sort of web. It’s really effective to see how these different articles are related to each other in a visual way.
