YouTube by Google, Inc. is the official YouTube video app for iOS.
Once a dedicated app on the homepage of all iPhones, YouTube is now a free but optional app that you must download to your iOS device.
It’s a robust app with tons of features, and is improved compared to the last rendition. It has an easy-to-use interface and has most of the features you’d see on the website.
You can upload or watch videos, follow channels, browse your playlists or channels, and more.
When you launch, you’ll see your home feed as if you were on a computer. If you want something else, the menu button on the top left of the screen slides out so you can watch your favorite videos or channels, change settings, or see different categories of movies that YouTube has on offer.
On the main screen you’ll also see a magnifying glass icon you’ll click on to search, and like with the website version, YouTube will offer suggestions from which to choose the one you want to view. If you’d rather, you can touch the microphone icon on the right-hand side of the search box and dictate your search query.
When watching a video, just turn your iPhone to view in landscape mode and the vid will go full-screen automatically. A landscape orientation gives you a smaller viewing area but offers tabs for browsing related videos, subscribing to the channel, and reading comments.
Of course, you can also share videos to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or via Messages or email.
YouTube was updated to Version 1.10.4136 on December 4, 2012. The update optimized the app for iPad and iPhone 5, added the option to stream videos with Airplay, and more. The current version has 8772 customer ratings with an average of three out of five stars.
Aside from the lack of High Quality viewing options, I don’t see a thing wrong with this app. The features all work really well and it’s nice having an app that does pretty much the same thing as the website. I use this app all the time.
