Windy app review: turn your iPhone or iPad into a wind instrument

Windy by Kindred Inc. is an innovative app that can turn your iPhone or iPad into a musical instrument. If you played the recorder or the flute back in high school you probably drove your parents nuts when you sat and practiced it on the edge of your bed. Now’s your chance to do it all over again with your own family. This app recreates the sound of several different wind instruments, although only one basic instrument is include in the free version. It’s still a lot of fun and you can give your lungs a workout in the process. Windy is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Turn your iPhone or iPad Into a Wind Instrument

There are lots of different music instrument apps in the App Store. There are piano apps, drum apps, and even guitar apps, but there aren’t too many wind instrument apps. Windy is quite a unique app and it really does work on both the iPhone or the iPad, although it’s a little more difficult using it on an iPad just because the width of the iPad makes reaching for the notes a little difficult unless you’ve got really big hands.

There are no ads in this one which is always a good thing, but there are in-app purchases. The free version comes with one basic instrument which by the sounds of it is a flute, although that isn’t really specified. You can gain access to three more instruments including a sax with an in-app purchase of $1.99. The other minor problem with this one is that there are no instructions in the app itself. To learn how to use it you’ll have to read over the App Store description carefully. Windy app will require 4.5 MB of available space on your iOS device.

The Essentials

It’s always fun when you come across a new app that explores the capabilities of your iPhone or iPad. Windy is one of these apps. Not only does it take advantage of your devices touchscreen capabilities, but it also uses your devices built-in microphone to turn it into a full-fledged musical instrument. On the devices screen you’ll see several different squares, each one representing a different musical note. To play that note you simply tap and hold it on the screen and blown into your microphone. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you can produce some beautiful sounds. Your kids will probably enjoy it as well.
