The 7 Minute Workout app review: transform your body with this short and intense workout

Reviews

Introduction

This app is designed to provide a solution to those of you who don’t have the time to spend endless hours at the gym, and instead, involves performing 12 different exercises for just 30 seconds each at a very high level of intensity to deliver maximum results in the minimum amount of time.

This kind of quick-fix fast-paced workout app seems to be doing the rounds quite a bit lately as high-intensity interval-style training is becoming more fashionable.

The 7 Minute Workout is a surefire way to squeeze in a quick workout when you don’t have much time on your hands, and it has a very simplistic user-interface with audio voice prompts to guide you through each exercise so you’ll know exactly what you’re doing.

7th Heaven... or 7th Hell?

This app follows a very simple premise which I always like to subscribe to: KISS – Keep it Simple Stupid!

The 12 exercises include full body movements such as squats, jumping jacks and planks, and performing these in the prescribed sequence will help to work all of your muscle groups while also giving your cardiovascular system a run for its money.

There is a tutorial section which very clearly lays out how to perform each exercise and when you begin the workout you’ll be given a countdown followed by audio voice prompts which will give you periodic updates to let you know when to switch exercises and how much time is left on each exercises.

I really like the way the voice prompts give 5-10 second updates and a 5-second countdown at the end because, for me, this provides a massive amount of psychological support and makes all the difference when you’re in the middle of a grueling exercise.

If it all proves to be too much you can always pause the workout, skip exercises, and review the instructions for each exercise without having to leave your workout.

I really appreciate little touches like this because it shows that the developer has clearly put some thought into designing this app and it makes for a much smoother user-experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Cram in an intense workout in just 7 minutes
  • Audio prompts and exercise instructions remove all the guesswork
  • Tutorial section includes integrated YouTube videos for even clearer instruction
  • Great simplistic user-interface makes navigation a cinch

Cons

  • No features for tracking progress or reviewing activities

...aaaand Rest!

To really get the most out of this app I definitely think you’ll have to work pretty hard because the workouts are so short, but if you’d rather adopt a more moderate pace you can just run through the sequence of exercise a few times to make for a longer and lower-intensity workout which can be just as productive.

One thing I would really like to see added in future updates is some kind of fitness or activity tracker which perhaps lets you earn achievements to share on sites like Facebook and Twitter. I think this would do wonders for boosting the motivation of some users who might not otherwise be self-starters.

All in all, this is a fantastic app and it’s definitely one of the better apps of its kind, so if you’re looking for a quick and simple way to start getting into shape, The 7 Minute Workout is exactly what you’ve been looking for!
